Found In A Roman Wishing Well
In 2010, archaeologists near Aylesbury, England, found four whole chicken eggs inside a Roman era pit that people had turned into a wishing well around AD 300.

Eggs Meant For Rebirth
Archaeologist Edward Biddulph says Romans linked eggs to rebirth and fertility, so this was likely an offering left during a funeral rite or religious ceremony.

The One Egg That Held
Of the four eggs, only three came out of the ground whole. Two of those cracked during retrieval in 2010, releasing a sulfurous smell built up over 1,700 years. Only one egg survived the lift whole and intact.

A Scan Thirteen Years On
In 2023 the University of Kent ran a micro CT scan on the surviving egg. Inside, still, was liquid yolk and albumen, and one small air bubble.

The Oldest Of Its Kind
Natural History Museum curator Douglas Russell called it the oldest unintentionally preserved bird egg he had ever seen, with no other naturally preserved egg known to be as old.
